Since joining Gills Onions in 1991, Irma Becerri has contributed to the team’s remarkable growth and success. Over the past 33 years, she has witnessed and contributed to the company’s remarkable growth and success. Reflecting on her early days, Irma fondly remembers the challenges of starting out: “When I started, there wasn’t much work, and they would send me home. But then they called me back. After that, I stayed – there was always plenty to do.”

Now, after over three decades, Irma is preparing to retire this December. We recently spoke with Irma about her time at Gills. Below, we share a bit about her legacy of excellence in the employee spotlight below.

A Journey Rooted in Hard Work

Originally from Guanajuato, Mexico, Irma moved to the United States in 1975. Before finding her home at Gills Onions, she worked in the lemon-packing and strawberry fields of California. These early experiences instilled in her a strong work ethic and a deep sense of gratitude for every opportunity. “I’ve always worked very happily,” she shares.

Irma’s tenure with Gills has been deeply rooted in loyalty. Her earliest days at Gills only had two production lines. She’s seen Gills expand to four production lines with around 70 team members. The growth of Gills mirrors Irma’s own professional journey and she takes pride in having been part of it every step of the way.

Beginning the Day with Purpose

Irma starts her days early. She wakes up at 4:30 a.m. to beat the morning traffic and arrive at work ahead of schedule. She’s come to treasure this quiet time before her shift begins. It allows her to enjoy a warm cup of coffee and mentally prepare for the day. Irma’s workdays are busy yet fulfilling, reflecting her strong sense of purpose and enthusiasm for supporting Gills’s production line.

Once she’s finished making sure all of the onions are prepped and up to standard, she wraps up her shift by walking, preparing meals, and spending time with her family. Irma and her husband (now retired) live with her son. Her daughter has a family of her own; Irma cherishes her role as grandmother to her three granddaughters. She finds joy in the simple moments she spends with them.

A Sense of Community

The sense of camaraderie Irma shares with her coworkers and the supportive environment have kept her excited to come to work every day. “Everyone here is so friendly. I’ve felt comfortable and appreciated the whole time I’ve been here,” she says. “The days feel short because I enjoy what I do.”

Over the years, Irma has seen the company grow and adapt, but one thing has remained constant: its strong sense of community. “The company has grown so much, but the sense of family has always stayed the same. That’s what I love most,” she reflects.

The Next Chapter for Irma

As Irma retires from Gills Onions this December, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for her incredible contributions over the years. Her legacy will continue to inspire her coworkers and serve as a reminder of the importance of teamwork, loyalty, and finding joy in what you do. We wish her all the best as she embarks on this new chapter of her life.

Thank you, Irma, for over three decades of excellence and for being such an integral part of the Gills family.
