Driven by Passion: Meet Armando López, Gills Onions Road Warrior

Armando López has been part of the Gills Onions family for over 25 years, with the last eight spent behind the wheel as a driver. His long tenure speaks volumes about his dedication, adaptability, and the pride he takes in his work. From his early days in the shipping office to his current role transporting fresh onions across California, Armando brings consistency and heart to everything he does.

We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Armando about his time at Gills, the rhythm of life on the road, and what makes this company feel like home.

Staying Sharp on California’s Roads

When Armando first joined Gills Onions, it wasn’t behind the wheel of a truck. It was in the shipping office. But over time, he found his place in transportation, where he’s spent the last eight years driving routes throughout California, delivering products to major distribution centers like Smart & Final, Albertsons, and Stater Bros.

“I get to go outside the city. I meet many people, many colleagues, many people from other places who go to the same place to deliver products,” he says. “I’m tired, but I’m happy because I like it. Every day I go to many places.”

Each workday starts early. Depending on his first delivery appointment, Armando may leave his house as early as 3 a.m. to ensure he arrives on time. His routes span around 10 hours a day, five days a week. It’s a demanding schedule, but it’s one that suits him.

Fueled by Family and Friendship

Armando didn’t find Gills by accident. His family brought him in. “My wife was already working here in QC, and she encouraged me to apply,” he shares. “Now, both she and my sister work here too.” His wife has been with the company for over 30 years, and his sister works in the packing department.

With such strong family ties to Gills, it’s no surprise Armando speaks warmly about the culture: “It’s a really pleasant environment. Everyone is kind, from supervisors to dispatchers. It’s a good place to be.”

Armando’s routes take him through some of California’s busiest areas, particularly Los Angeles. The job demands focus and caution, which is why he avoids distractions like talking on the phone or even listening to much music while driving.

“There are so many accidents every day,” he says. “I stay very concentrated when I’m behind the wheel. Only when I’m parked or waiting for a delivery do I call family or listen to music.”

He recalls seeing some wild scenes on the freeway—overturned trucks, dangerous weather conditions, even a semi hanging off a bridge. But thanks to Gills’ safety-first culture and truck cameras, he always puts security first.

The Journey to Gills Onions and a Job That Fits

Outside of work, Armando stays active. He enjoys long walks along the beach near his home and keeps up an exercise routine that includes biking and walking. With two grown granddaughters, he values time with family. On the weekends, he lets his wife take the driver’s seat.

When asked what he enjoys most about his job, Armando lights up: “I like getting out of the city, seeing new places, and meeting people. That’s what I love: driving.”

Over the years, Armando has seen Gills evolve from a small plant to a major operation with large-scale production. “When I started, it was much smaller,” he says. “Now, it’s huge, and it has grown a lot.”

Even after decades, Armando’s commitment hasn’t wavered. He remains a reliable, positive presence, someone who has grown with the company and continues to represent it with pride.

We’re proud to spotlight Armando López: an essential part of our transportation team and a valued member of the Gills Onions family.
