We’re thrilled to announce that Gills Onions is launching the Double Your Impact Challenge to support Students for Eco-Education and Agriculture (SEEAG). During the month of May 2021, Gills Onions will match all donations to SEEAG up to $10,000. Read on to find out why you should help us double our impact! (Skip to the end to learn how to donate.)
SEEAG’s Mission (and Ours, Too)
Students for Eco-Education and Agriculture (SEEAG) is a nonprofit organization that aims to help young students understand the origins of their food. Since 2008, SEEAG has been helping to bridge the gap between agriculture and consumption through engaging educational programming. All SEEAG programs are 100 percent cost-free to schools and students.
Take, for example, “The Farm Lab” program, which teaches schoolchildren all about the origins of their food and the importance of local farmland. SEEAG provides schools with classroom Ag education and free field trips to local farms.
In Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, the Child Wellness Initiative inspires and empowers children to eat healthy foods by adding locally grown fruits and veggies to their diet.
Through these and other amazing SEEAG programs, over 60,000 elementary school students in Central and Southern California have learned more about where their food comes from and have developed a more educated and mindful approach to what they eat.
A Brighter Future Through Ag Education
Gills Onions is one of the nation’s largest family-owned onion growers and processors. We consider each of our employees and their families a part of our family, too, and we are committed to actively participating in and improving our community.
SEEAG’s programs serve the children of our employees and our community members, but they also serve a bigger purpose. Like SEEAG, we believe that Ag education can change the world. When people understand where their food comes from and how to use fresh, healthy foods in their diet, their world changes. Their health improves. They are more conscious of the world around them and the impact that they have on our planet. They understand how important the Ag industry is to local and global economies. The list goes on and on.
We partner with SEEAG because its commitment to Ag education mirrors our own. We know that for children, understanding the food journey sets them up for a healthier life. When children eat more healthy foods like fruits and vegetables, they are better able to ward off childhood obesity and diabetes. Ag education programs also open young eyes to the impact each person can have and even introduce children to new career opportunities.
“Gill’s Onions is one of SEEAG’s biggest supporters,” says Mary Maranville, SEEAG founder and CEO. “After a year of being out of the classroom and our farm field trips put on hold because of COVID-19, we’re beginning to schedule in-person instruction for this year and next. The $20,000 total donation will help us fulfill SEEAG’s educational mission.”
