What would Taco Tuesday be without its star player: onions? Let’s be honest, it wouldn’t exist. Whether it’s onions seasoning your meat, a few diced onions on top, or the essential ingredient to oh-so-delectable salsa, onions and tacos are a match made in heaven.

Where did Taco Tuesday come from, anyway?

It’s hard to remember a time without Taco Tuesdays, isn’t it? The phrase has been around for decades, five to be exact. In 1973, the Rapid City Journal published an advertisement with the term “Taco Tuesday,” making it the first recorded use of the phrase. Lately, the phrase has been making headlines again, as one taco chain said: “Nobody should have exclusive rights to a common phrase.” We have no interest in getting into that, but we firmly believe that everyone has a right to have their own Taco Tuesday—and a delicious one at that.

There’s no Taco Tuesday without onions

Whether they are diced and beautiful sitting on top or snuck inside salsa, onions give Taco Tuesday that zing we all love. With tried and true methods of using onions, we consider ourselves experts on what onions make Taco Tuesday the best day of the week.

Gill’s Onions grows and processes yellow and red onions, utilized by local restaurants and families alike. Tacos La Bonita knows the necessity of a good onion in tacos (“No onions, no tacos!” owner Maria Agraz says). Like many restaurants, they take advantage of our beautiful yellow onions, finely diced. Want some color for your pico de gallo? Choose red onions.

Whether you like them super fine (¼ inch diced) or maybe a little chunky (⅜ inch diced is another favorite), you can save yourself some time and tears by choosing our options for Tuesday night.

How you can use onions to spice up Taco Tuesday

Ready to start your own tradition of Taco Tuesdays? Or maybe you’re throwing a fiesta with neighbors and friends. Tacos are a great, and affordable, way to feed the masses. Here are some ideas to take your Taco Tuesday to the next level:

  • Taco Bar. Spread out the fillings and the sides, and everyone can make their own taco to taste. Whether it’s one or several types of meat, with cheese, guacamole, and several spice levels of salsa, you can keep everyone happy. Need a new taco recipe? Check this one out.
  • Taste testing. Offer an array of salsas and have a taste test. Maybe you have taco experts who can tell a type of salsa from one bite, or maybe you just want to try something new. Choose tiny taco shells from the supermarket so people can have more than one type of taco without overfilling their bellies, and then whip up some new types of salsa. We love grilled peach and pineapple salsa, or perhaps a lime-jalapeño with pickled red onions to add a little variety.
  • Non-traditional tacos. Ok—hear us out. What about breakfast tacos? Fruit tacos? And who could resist a chocolate taco? There are more types of taco than you could think of, which makes for a fun potluck theme.
